Anyone ever worked with a Yamaha KT100 engine? I need to get this one working. What tips do you have for these engines? I've worked on old V8s but never a two stroke 1 cyl kart engine. I'm assuming I use premix gas/oil? Any idea what spark plug gap I should have? I know I don't have an airbox but I can just run without a filter temporarily I assume? I can't find an owners manual anywhere for this engine.

Edit: Where does the starter go? I have a hand held starter gun thing but I don't know where it goes...

Depending on how it is old there might be reeds that need to be changed.

Yes, mixed fuel is a must. As long as it is making spark I wouldn't really worry for now. No air filter is ok for a bit, I wouldn't go do a burn around the block or anything without one. The air filter being on can sometimes change the mixing if you set the carb with it off.

Hope to see lots on here about this contraption.

Well the kart hasn't been run since 2012. I'm in charge of the race team running the kart so it's my job to get it running. If the engine runs sub optimally I'll pull it off the kart and take it to the local shop, I'm way to busy to do it myself and besides, I have a bunch of money to play with.

Piston rings likely need to be done too.

If someone else is paying its great to give it to a shop that works with 2-strokes, they can be fickle. Awesome you will be able to run around on these things!

Any more celebrity AMA's give Emma (I think thats what you called it) approval?

Yeah... this is my dorm's race cart. I'm paying for everything using everybody elses housing payments! Adam from TGUS had a nice quote for me, that's about it.

0.035" gap, definitely premix 40:1 or 35:1. No airbox a no-no for extended runs - needs air filter. Starter goes in hole on outboard side of motor in the end of the clutch housing co-axial with the crank.

It is reed/case induction, so you might need to unstick the reeds. No starting ether! You might rinse the life giving oil from the bearings, ring, and piston.

Is this cross posted to pullstart my heart?

This part "It is reed/case induction, so you might need to unstick the reeds. No starting ether! You might rinse the life giving oil from the bearings, ring, and piston." What does all that mean and what do I do about it? I'm new to two strokes.

Of course it is!

Take the engine to a shop if you don't have time to go through it, better to have it torn down and looked than a possible explosion. Plus you might be able to get it looked at for cheap if you play your cards right.

It was my plan to buy a new engine I figured it would be good form to see if this engine works so I have it as a spare if I need it.

pull the arb off the front of the engine. Between the car and the head/case will be a block with a set of reeds on it, like a clarinet, but flowing the opposite way. Pull the reed assembly out and ensure they are not damaged or stuck open or closed - either way, she won't fire.

The reeds act as a one-way valve only letting the fuel/air mixture enter when the piston is traveling up, and allowing this intake charge to be pressurized when the piston begins traveling back down before the transfer ports are exposed when the pressurized crankcase exhales not tell cylinder while the piston is at BDC. When the piston travels up again, the transfer port is blocked by the piston and compression can occur before TDC and ignition.

SO... check the reeds and ensure r h e float bowl on teamrubuconusa carb is not full of mung or water.

Belay all of that except the carb being full of mung. The KT100 does not have reeds... they port opening is controlled by the piston movement.

So I suppose I'm good to run once I get fuel/oil to it then! Oh, and where do batteries go on karts like this?

No batteries necessary. Magneto coil spark igntion... you just have to adjust timing.
